About Us

Mr. Md Nurul Islam was the founding Chairman of the English Department in 1970. He was later joined by Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui and Mr. Abu Taher Majumder in 1973. It was the same year when the first batch of Honours students was enrolled in the English Department.

In course of time the department was enriched by teachers who were known for their scholarly and academic aptitudes. Professor Siddiqui made the department proud by successfully serving the university as Vice-Chancellor for two consecutive terms and later becoming a “Swadhinota Dibosh Podok” recipient. His appointment as the education advisor to the caretaker government in 1990 was yet another momentous occasion for the department.

Another distinguished faculty member, Professor Harunur Rashid acted as the director general of the Bangla Academy, highlighting the department’s contribution at a national level. Renowned creative writers like Professor Abu Rushd Matinuddin, Professor ANM Bazlur Rashid and “Ekushey Podok” recipient poet Mohammad Rafiq, theatre personalities like Professor Shafi Ahmed, poet-critics like Professor Abu Taher Majumder, Dr. Azfar Hussain, translators like Mr. Kawsar Hussain, Professor Ahmed Reza, linguists like Professor Dr. M. Maniruzzaman and writer-critics like Dr. Shamsad Mortuza adorned the department.

Other renowned and celebrated teachers of this department include Prof. Dr. Khaliquzzaman Elias, Professor Dr. Afzal Hossain, Professor Dr. Shireen Huq, Professor Shaheen M. Kabir. The department is currently an interesting mix of teachers with varied interest in both language and literature.
